WTF happened to the Federation? They’re as bad as the Borg.

I mentioned a possibility some pages back; if you extrapolate from the early TNG concept that humans have no conflict in the future, it implies everyone thinks the same. The intent is that it is some sort of bottom up cultural aspect which emerged on its own from being at peace, but fortunately we see all humans don’t think alike in the future. Take the early concept to its greatest extent, and instead of just being a natural outgrowth it is not much of a leap to see a few bright bulbs think they can export that peace to other species, if only they could think the right way.

TOS is rife with extremely advanced mind reading and writing technologies, mix in some modern thought on networking ala the Borg and you get instant universal groupthink. Fun for the whole family.

It could just as easily be an accident. If the technology was just meant as a tool, like a smart phone, but with direct brain interface, and brain to brain communication, it is easy to imagine a conference call function where thoughts and feelings are instantly shared. That conference call function would create a minor hive mind.

At some point a group would just leave the call open all the time, and add more members to the call, instead of disconnecting and starting a new call. Those new members would pick up the trick of leaving the conference call open all the time and either start their own hive mind, or join the first one they encounter.

From this, uniformity of thought would easily emerge, as would groupthink which could lead to enslaving the Kelvans, rather than befriending them.

Looks like the “no contact” rule with Talos IV has ended. The Federation and it’s own technology has made a worse hash out of things than the Talosians ever could have, so why not?
