Definitely an interesting thought experiment for how the rest of the Trek movies might’ve gone. Would even have gotten more movies or would this have launched Phase II the TV Series, with Decker in command? Would Leonard Nimoy remain or would they replace him with Xon? Who would become the new XO? Would they ever convince Shatner to come back after he was replaced? So many ways you could take this!
This choice makes so much more sense for Kirk than it does Decker in the actual movie.
