I completely forgot they were leaving the planet, with that leading to the Federation going there in the first place.
This is sounding a bit like hippies versus squares. If these are plant people the adults could be incredibly old farts.

Crap, this just made me realize that we are dealing with literal flower children here! Thumbs up

As a reward (and tribute to the story thus far), I present Listen to the Flower People…

It may also apply to the Captain/XO conflict, based on how much New Humanism is regarded as a “movement” as opposed a next phase in evolution where humans have tapped into their psionic potential. Which is probably why Delos Reyes has ZERO faith in her captain, having convinced herself that he’s full of shit, and all his attempts at diplomacy is just him saying “Can’t we all just get along, man…” and is afraid that one day he’ll snap and start playing John Lennon over the intercom.

Despite all that, I still haven’t parsed Afshar`s opinion of her yet. Give me some time, his mind may be “impossible to read” at the moment, but it won’t stay that way forever.

There’s no telling how this will go, it could turn out the New Humans are really a bunch of bull even with the mind power. There is a lot of talk in TNG about how humans have evolved, but it’s never really substantiated. DS9 actually shows it is really just a matter of living condition, not a fundamental change in humanity. Quark sees through it, and O’Brien proves it.

It could also turn out Afshar doesn’t actually see in Reyes what he thinks. But, I like to think he does see something great in her. Except, so far it looks less like Reyes has a dedication to the truth, and more a desire to use anything available to undermine religion.
