An agricultural crisis on the Vrapnahr homeworld? Would seem to provide plenty of impetus for interested parties to seek more productive pastures.

You know, it would be a real twist if Mudd was somehow right and all the regulations the Crothanites were living under were repressing them. On the other hand, given the low number, this is probably Mudd speaking.

At this point I won’t be surprised if Mudd’s actions resulting in attempted genocide will inadvertently save the colonists from them all being murdered or enslaved. Adding saving them from a totalitarian society is just icing on the cake. But, the main planet being uninhabitable could just as easily not imply nefarious intent, it might have been necessary in order to throw the Croth government off the colonists’ trail, which fits with what this panel implies.

On the third hand, this could be a Zanatos Gambit, the captain knows all along who Mudd is, wanted him on the ship, and plans to exploit the chaos he causes as a cover of her actions which she would take regardless. I think this is unlikely.

Call me crazy, but I see someone having their Federation membership card revoked when this is all over.
