Should have included McCoy as well. It was never just Spock and Kirk, McCoy was a vital component of a three part decision making process. His compassion and sentiment was needed just as much as Spock’s logic and rationality. The gestalt being will be flawed without it.

But the romance, platonic or otherwise, has always been between Kirk and Spock. McCoy was a third wheel. In both the book and film TMP is all about how Kirk gets his ship and his Vulcan back. Kirk wants to replicate Spock through Sonak. Spock denies the Kholinar not just for Vejur, but because he can’t stop thinking about Kirk as his friend/lover. Gene coined the term “t’hy’la” to explain their relationship. When Kirk is chasing Spock out the airlock and later holding hands with him in sickbay McCoy plays no part.

Testing comments… I haven’t been able to read them for awhile. I haven’t actually tried posting one.
