One thing I can’t help but wonder is how the other Trek movies might’ve gone without Kirk and Spock? Would they have gradually replaced the rest of the TOS cast or would they have made more of them seeing as how the scenery chewing Kirk wasn’t around anymore? Or would this have been the launching off point for Phase II (a big budget “backdoor pilot”)?
If they went the movie root, TWOK might still work is Khan directed his need for revenge against the Enterprise as a whole and not solely Kirk, which would see Decker caught up in a situation not of his making but one he’d have to deal with. With no Spock then there wouldn’t be any need to search for him, unless Xon was the one who gave his life to save the ship.
Thinking of it, a new TV series would’ve been the best root, to really help flesh out the newly introduced characters, as well as take a more ensemble approach and actually give the rest of the cast something more to do as well (unless they decided to replace many of them with new characters as well).
It’s really interesting to think about in-universe, too.
TWOK: Does it even happen? Kirk seemed to be involved in Project Genesis, so maybe it doesn’t get off the ground without his sponsorship.
TSFS: Without TWOK, it obviously doesn’t happen. But let’s say Genesis did get made, Kahn does his thing and the planet goes boom. Decker, if he still has the Enterprise, could probably respond to the Grissom’s disappearance with a fully crewed ship, not distracted by the death of his child. I say Kruge is still doomed, maybe even quicker this time.
TVH: This is where it gets fun. Spock SEEMED to be the only person in the galaxy to figure out what the probe wanted. On the other hand, it could be that every starship science officer put this together and the Bounty just got there first, already on its way to Earth. In that case, I say Xon works it out and they maybe do the same thing, but with a better ship than a battered bird-of-prey.
TFF: Oof. Xon, in place of Spock, pulls the trigger on Sybok. Roll credits.
TUC: Extremely interesting. Without Spock to participate in negotiations, maybe Gorkon is never invited to Earth. The Klingon Empire dies out, taking a lot of innocents with it as it wages a glorious war across the galaxy one last time.

Lots of possibilities, to explore!
