Yanno, I ate this stuff up as a kid in 1979 and I guess I never thought about it much until now — but for an outer-system probe like the Voyagers, a ready-to-transmit signal followed by a wait for acknowledgment at outer-system distances using light-speed signals doesn’t sound like the most efficient way to do things. IIRC, the actual Voyagers just sent their information back and the big DSN antennas on Earth soaked it up.
I dunno. Maybe Tan-ru’s cousin or the Borg or whoever pimped Voyager’s ride futzed with the programming or something.

I’ve thought about how I would redux TMP, though in a very different manner which would send some much beloved characters on a different path.

Earlier, when the initial probe is on the bridge, it is Spock that it abducts, before V’Ger sends Spock-Probe back to the Enterprise to study the carbon units. Kirk and McCoy try to reconnect with him. Meanwhile, Ilia ventures out to connect telepathically with the ship. At the end, as Spock-Probe demands input directly from the Creator, it’s Kirk that makes the sacrifice for his friend and for the opportunity to explore entirely new realms and dimensions. In the aftermath, Decker resumes his position as Captain and McCoy once again retires from active service, with Chapel taking back her sickbay. Decker then takes on Commander Thelin as his Exec and Lieutenant (jg) Xon as Science Officer, before leading his five-year mission.

“WHY HAS THE CREATOR NOT ANSWERED?”

If I had a nickel for every time someone’s said that in the depths of despair…
