Seeing that chain-link fencing is 175 years old (developed in 1844 in jolly old England). Easy and inexpensive to manufacture, design, build, long-lasting and does not require high-tech machinery and materials to make, it will probably be in wide spread usage hundreds (If not thousands) of years into the future especially on colony worlds and a technologically “safe” import to less advanced post-contact worlds.
In fact, I’d be very surprised if it wasn’t independently invented on many post-industrial revolution worlds as it meets many needs and requirements that natural fencing is unable to fulfill (height, length, costs and time). Chain-link was invented before barb-wire (patented in 1874) which is even easier, quicker and requires less advanced machinery to make.
21st century style chain link fence seems to be a product with a future. I think I know the family who’ll sell it to said faction.
