I think I might have to forget how this goes in the show and just remember it this way. But the intended context seems different, so I’m curious how this plays out. It’s a heroically compassionate scene in the show.
Considering that Rojan is the guy who turns people into big salt crystals and then smashes them, he deserved getting the crap beaten out of him like that.
It’s not about vengeance, Kirk was proving his point that Rojan had become human by baiting Rojan into a fight. Instead of Rojan just turning Kirk into a crystal he attacked Kirk with his fists, proving Kirk’s point. Kirk ends up getting him in a choke hold, he explains his point, and then he makes the same offer to cooperatively help the Kelvans despite them having been invaders.
Having checked the first panel again, I see the word “reconstructed.” I now wonder if this will be a little like Voyager’s “Livigin Witness” where the aliens of the week are reconstructing their history and get it very wrong. Except, this time maybe it is the Kelvans recovering records from a Starfleet intergalactic probe.
The fight had it’s strategic purposes, sure, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Kirk’s method of humanizing the Kelvans was seducing the woman and beating up the guy who killed his Yeoman of the Week. Kirk’s not above simple vengeance. Witness Kras in Friday’s Child.
