Yay, tow solution! Although, this leaves me wondering if the mystery radiation effects are permanent since our jump-suited hero has yet to return, besides the radiation being self sufficient. The intensity drop off of the radiation also means it might be extremely weak with extremely disproportionate effects. It could be the basis of a weapon itself, unless it already is the basis of the secret weapon which started this whole hullabaloo. It certainly would be a hoot if that’s enough to recreate the weapon.
Warp nacelle and warp engine are synonymous. Our friendly neighborhood artist is also going by the multiple warp core theory, where the Constitution-class has three warp cores with one in each nacelle, and a central one with the triangle chamber either in the saucer or secondary hull.
Out of universe, that’s correct, the concept of a specific reactor where the matter-animatter reaction occurs, and plasma is feed through conduits up the pylons and then into the coils of the nacelle to warp space is a later invention. Nobody during TOS really had a clear idea where anything was or what it is doing, and budgets were limited. That’s why the location for main engineering is so confusing; is it in the primary hull/saucer section at the back, or in the big cylindrical stardrive/secondary hull? Scotty is shown working on the warp drive in one location one week and then a completely different one the next.
Since that time, it’s kinda been retconned that the TOS Enterprise and similar ships have the main engineering in the stardrive section, the reactor is the big double-domed generator things in the middle of the room where we see Scotty and Spock working to fit the dilithium crystals in Elann of Troyius, and the big criss-crossing tubes behind the red grill are the plasma relay conduits that feed up into the nacelles.
While Mark seem to be ignoring a lot of canon, specifically Star Trek: Enterprise, where we saw the Constitution-class USS Defiant in action in In a Mirror, Darkly, which has several cross-sections of the Defiant that show the locations of everything, including establishing that the Constitutions at that time have warp coils, bussard ramscoops, and main engineering is in the stardrive:
Nice! I remember reading this as a proposed solution on the last strip, it’s always intensely gratifying to see characters working through problems as the audience does.

Isn’t the engine inside the ship…?

I think he is assuming no warp core, which is a later invention, and that all the warp drive reactory stuff is up in the nacelles.

Ah good responses to my query. *taps gavel* I’ll allow it! 🙂
