That’s a really strange point from which to decide the Republic was a Constitution-class ship. The author, self admittedly, arbitrarily decides the class begins at 1700, but the Republic has a lower number, and the Constellation NCC-1071 is even lower still, and we know for sure that ship is of the Constitution-class.

In that case I could see older, or particular, ships using fission power for impulse, but it seems odd for the Constitution class to bother with it.
It could have just as easily been “all our antimatter has been deactivated.” That crap happened in an episode of Voyager.

Having a shuttle for ship diagnostics in an emergency situation? AWESOME! I can see neato action coming from that.
Nothing new in that. The NX-01 had an inspection pod for similar purposes, so why not a Connie?
