I can only wonder how much of this is ass covering and how much is a Kirk-ish desire to break the society. It’s like that Voyager episode where the crew removes Ferengi from a Medieval world, but instead of reaffirming the local beliefs they wreck them on the way out after jumping through every hoop to stay in local bounds.
Assuming, as I think we’re meant to, that Big Idol is a historical artifact of the shotgun-wielding tentacle-pods, how were the Vikranters or other Starfleeters able to sap the thing so that its destruction is enabled by a “self-destruct” command? More to be revealed, I think. And some signature Trek spacelawyering (as repeatedly demonstrated by Kirk & Picard, LPA) as to why the ol’ Prime Directive doesn’t really apply here. XO and Captain will be at odds, of course, with the seeming setup being that Captain (this time) will be the stickler and XO the creative interpreter.
